Spoiler: It's not magic, it's chemistry (very clever)
Inside your PlanPee bag is a special powder called superabsorbent polymer (or SAP , for short). You can find it in sachet form or in gauze form (which is coated/made of the same powder).
The most common is sodium polyacrylate . If you looked at it under a microscope, it would look like a sponge made of tiny nets eager to swallow water like there was no tomorrow.
When you urinate in the bag, the water from your urine enters this "sponge" thanks to a phenomenon called osmotic pressure . The polymer swells, traps the liquid, and boom! You have a stable gel that won't leak even if you squeeze it.
Step by step of the “miracle”
- Contact : pee hits dust and the party begins.
- Attraction : The negative charges of the polymer attract water molecules.
- Swelling : water enters, the polymer network expands.
- Blockage : The liquid is trapped in the form of a gel and no more leaks.
And why does it sometimes not gel?
Because PlanPee powder is good, but it's not invincible.
The trick is in the composition of the pee . If your urine is too "strong," the powder won't be able to absorb it properly.
The most common causes:
- Too much salt and not enough water : If you're dehydrated, eat too much salt, or take certain supplements, your pee becomes a luxurious cocktail of salts and minerals. The powder gives way, and all you have to do is become liquid.
- pH outside the ideal range : The powder works best if the urine is neither too acidic nor too alkaline. Diet, medications, or your metabolism can move the needle.
- Extra minerals and electrolytes : potassium, magnesium, calcium… all of these take up space in the “osmotic exchange” and reduce the powder’s capacity.
👉🏻 Translation: If your pee looks like the Dead Sea, gel isn't forming.
Real example
We did the test: Person A: normal pee → perfect blue gel.
Person B: more concentrated pee → all blue liquid.
Same bag model, different results. The difference? The internal "recipe" of pee.
How to improve the chances of gelling?
-
Drink enough water (especially before using PlanPee at festivals, on trips or while hiking).
- Extra tip: Remember that if you drink alcohol, the best way to avoid dehydration is to drink a glass of water for every glass/beer you have...
- Avoid excess salt just before (goodbye mega-salty snacks). +
- Don't worry : even if it doesn't gel, PlanPee is still safe and leak-proof. Remember, it has a hermetic zip 😉
Quick summary for the impatient
“ PlanPee solidifies your pee… unless your pee is so concentrated that even powder can't break it. It's chemistry, not magic. But even if it doesn't gel, your PlanPee is still doing its job .”
